Amazon MGM boss Mike Hopkins dropped that line in a recent interview, all but confirming that Bond 26 will have a proper theatrical release. Realistically, no one expected otherwise, since skipping theaters would leave millions (if not potentially a billion) dollars on the table.
The financial side is obviously the biggest factor, but there’s also the simple fact that James Bond belongs on the big screen. For most movies today, I don’t necessarily mind a streaming debut, but I prefer my first viewing of a James Bond movie in a theater.
I know plenty of other fanbases feel the same way about their favorite franchises, and there’s still a small group of people who would prefer theatrical releases for everything. For this Bond fan, there’s absolutely no other cinematic experience quite like sitting in a packed theater, the lights dimming and the gun barrel opening sequence kicks things off. Goosebumps every time!
