GoldenEye (1995)

Who’s strangling the cat?

Following up on the previous post, this is a perfect example of Bond and Zukovsky’s entertaining dynamic in GoldenEye. While Bond questions Zukovsky, his mistress Irina is performing karaoke of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” with a rather loud (and very out-of-tune) delivery. Bond’s quip catches Zukovsky completely off guard, and he initially has no idea what “cat” Bond is referring to until he realizes it’s a jab at Irina’s singing.

The joke quickly turns the scene tense when Zukovsky angrily fires a gun into Bond’s chair, missing his crotch by inches. It’s a great reminder of how their interactions can shift from playful banter to genuine danger in a split second.

It’s also funny that nobody in the club seems particularly alarmed by the gunshot, with no one running away or panicking. But then again, with a criminal kingpin like Zukovsky as a regular, maybe this is just considered another normal night out.
