You Only Live Twice (1967)

Actually, I’m a spy.

Bond gets surprisingly blunt in You Only Live Twice when under interrogation by Helga Brandt he casually admits his occupation. And not some euphemism for government work or a less nefarious-sounding title, he just says straight up “spy,” in I think the only instance of him calling himself as such. For a person who usually survives on misdirection and charm when in danger, the line feels unusually direct. Either Brandt was an exceptionally persuasive interrogator (kisser?), or Bond recognized that honesty was his best escape route. I lean toward the latter, but it still makes for one of the more unique Bond girl-villain dynamics in the series. Little did Bond know that Brandt’s entire push for romance was a calculated deception that ends with Bond’s attempted murder aboard a crashing airplane.
