As the James Bond franchise looks ahead to Bond 26 and beyond, it’s fair to wonder whether one of its cheekiest traditions has quietly been retired. The series has long indulged in knowingly suggestive names, from Pussy Galore to Holly Goodhead, with lighter entries like Plenty O’Toole and Mary Goodnight adding to the long-running wink at the audience.
By the time Xenia Onatopp arrived in GoldenEye, I felt like the name got some laughs, but was a more polished entry and in better taste than previous tries. Since then, the Craig era has largely steered clear of such overt wordplay, favoring normalcy. Moving forward, I have a hard time seeing one of these names crop up in Bond 26 at the outset of a new Bond actor, but maybe if some levity is presented in that movie, the future for these funny names will be brighter.
Despite the current serious tone of the James Bond character, a well-placed innuendo handled with a bit of charm could remind audiences that 007 doesn’t always have to take himself quite so seriously.
