The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

Well, now, who will start the bidding?

Max Kalba delivers this line in The Spy Who Loved Me with a touch of arrogance, right before it’s brutally undercut by a phone call and a fatal encounter with Jaws. It’s a perfect reminder that in Bond, bravado can have a short shelf life.

Speaking of bidding, it makes me wonder how the real-world auction for Bond itself went. Amazon ultimately secured MGM and the franchise, though it wasn’t exactly a quiet, uncontested win. One can’t help but wonder how different things might look under Netflix, which for some unknown reason I have more confidence in than Amazon. Would we have seen a new Bond actor announced by now, or even have had a new Bond movie released?

As Bond fans, I just hope we aren’t left hopeless in the integrity and cadence of new media like Lord of the Rings fans, who (judging by social media/Reddit complaints) are at their wits end with Amazon and their handling of Rings of Power.
