The rope torture sequence from Casino Royale is fairly popular amongst Bond fans, but not with this one.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s an excruciating sequence, and the pain inflicted with a rope whacking you while sitting in a bottomless chair must be unimaginable, I’m sure. But I just don’t think it was the best torture choice for the movie. Instead of feeling terror and second-hand pain at the scene, I felt the ick. I think the nature of the torture (not that any is particularly appetizing) and the thought of the damage done was disgusting. It’s far removed from more appealing sequences like Connery’s iconic (almost) laser beam torture sequence from Goldfinger or Brosnan’s decapitating chair from The World Is Not Enough.
Not to be a prude, but I’m not sure they needed to be so graphic to convey Bond in distress, as they’ve shown in the past it can be done in a more understated fashion.
