Bond has this surprisingly sharp greeting for Mary Goodnight after her kidnapping in The Man with the Golden Gun. It’s a bit odd that Bond doesn’t offer any relief or reassurance to her, but instead utters this cutting remark that feels unusually dismissive, even by his standards. But it’s par for the course for how much of a dick James Bond is throughout this movie.
I like to think that this is the case because he’s repeatedly outmaneuvered and constantly playing catch-up in the movie. He seems particularly frustrated with Goodnight as well as with Andrea Anders with curt dialogue and a noticeable lack of charm. Opposite Francisco Scaramanga, a villain who mirrors Bond’s skill and composure, Moore’s 007 feels less in control and more irritated, making it one of Moore’s most unusually stern turns as Bond.
