Shady Tree’s stand-up routine in Diamonds Are Forever is one of the movie’s several eye-roll inducing scenes. I get that he was going for a vaudevillian style comedy routine, and maybe it’s just because it’s the 1970’s, but his watered-down imitation of Rodney Dangerfield always rubbed me the wrong way. The real entertainment comes from the stone faced reactions from from Bond, Mr. Wint, and Mr. Kidd, who all look visibly unimpressed with each joke’s punchline.
Although I can appreciated the joke about Willard Whyte “playing Monopoly with real buildings,” the difficulty in finding him compared to finding a “virgin in a maternity ward” is just awkward and dorky. Sometimes, I just can’t handle the camp of Diamonds Are Forever.
