Casino Royale (1967)

James Bond doesn’t wear glasses

This quick line from official Bond movie Goldfinger alum Ursula Andress in the unofficial Casino Royale (1967) references the lack of eyewear of James Bond as if he’s a colloquially known figure. It happens again in the movie when the casino cashier asks Evelyn Tremble’s “James Bond” for an autograph. It reminds me of the same sentiment from Diamonds Are Forever when Tiffany Case exclaims “You just killed James Bond!” as if he’s well known.

So how does anyone actually know James Bond enough that they know he doesn’t wear glasses? Is he a public figure? I’d assume a British Secret Agent really wouldn’t live up to the crux of their profession if that was the case. Casino Royale is also one of the only James Bond movies where “James Bond” is an assigned identity that can be transferred or used by others, an extenuating scenario where Craig’s Bond dying in No Time To Die could have been explained (that I, of course, hate).
