Despite its many flaws, there are some humorous memorable moments and lines in the unofficial Casino Royale spoof from 1967. Delivered by “Anti-Female-Spy Device” Cooper as he introduces himself to Moneypenny, the line neatly captures the film’s self-aware absurdity. The movie’s humor can be genuinely effective in isolated moments and elicits honest laughs like with this line. Yet surrounding these fun moments is excessive camp and an uneven tone that quickly undermines the amusement. The result is a Bond movie that oscillates between clever satire and exhausting parody that never fully commits to either to its detriment. At least we’ll always have this cleverly outrageous way to advertise one’s supposed sexual prowess.
