Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

Character Spotlight: Norman Burton as Felix Leiter

In Diamonds Are Forever, Norman Burton’s Felix Leiter ranks among my least favorite interpretations of the character. The shortcomings are less an indictment of Norman Burton’s acting abilities and more a reflection of the movie’s pervasive campiness. In that sense, Leiter is written less as a capable CIA counterpart to Bond and more as an accessory to the movie’s humor. Burton’s elastic expressions and broadly comic exchanges with Bond undercut any sense of professionalism or parity that normally defines their relationship.

Pardon the Diamonds Are Forever gambling pun, but Burton played the hand he was dealt and delivered exactly what the production required. The issue lies not with his performance, but how the writing frames Felix Leiter in a way that prioritizes levity over competence and ultimately undercuts Leiter’s normal gravitas within the Bond narrative.
