That philosophy is brutally realized in Felix Leiter’s fate after he’s dragged from the shark tank purposefully half-devoured and left alive to endure unimaginable physical suffering while also confronting the murder of his wife.

Leiter’s arc in the movie begins with his joyous wedding, but spirals into one of the darkest emotional descents of any James Bond character. Not surprisingly, this, and other examples of Sanchez’s cruelty make him one of the most effective villains of all time. The filmmakers stripped away Sanchez’s cartoonish Bond-villain theatrics and replaced them with something far more sinister.
