Bond’s offhand remark in Goldfinger is easy to miss right before he’s knocked out by Oddjob at the hotel fridge, yet it’s a quietly funny line. It lives in the shadow of his more famous quip about Dom Perignon ’53 champagne and the jab about listening to the Beatles with earmuffs, but this aside may reveal a smaller detail of the character.
What makes the line intriguing is that a cursory search of “passion juice” suggests it was not recognized 1960s slang for Dom Perignon, which makes it feel deliberately personal to Bond. Referring to champagne with a nickname that borders on slightly suggestive and nerdy might give us a glimpse into Bond’s modus operandi when it comes to women and alcohol.
Ultimately, it’s difficult to know whether the writers intended that level of nuance, and it’s entirely possible I’m reading too much into the line. Still, it struck me as worth calling out, if not for the kicks. Moments like this are exactly the sort of overlooked details I enjoy highlighting on this site!
