Bond’s final quip “inflated opinion of himself” in Live and Let Die after Kananga’s explosive demise isn’t one of my favorites. I realize it’s meant to be clever, but the odd phrasing feels forced and disconnected from how people actually speak. I’ve described people as egotistical or arrogant, but almost never as having an “inflated opinion.”
The moment is undercut further by Solitaire’s clueless reaction and her naïve question about Kananga’s whereabouts, despite the deafening explosion and body parts floating around them. Instead of contributing something positive to the scene, Solitaire again lets her willful obliviousness shine through.
Ultimately, this Forced Quip is not terrible, but hardly memorable. And yet, I still appreciate any Bond quip because they are uniquely Bond, even when they miss.
