Thunderball (1965)

Sorry, old chap. Better luck next time.

No, this isn’t a triumphant quip delivered after Bond dispatches a primary villain, nor is it the coda to an explosive showdown.  It’s from Thunderball, and (of all things) Bond says it to a shark after narrowly escaping its jaws in Largo’s pool.  The line may read as cheeky wordplay, but it’s also a subtle release valve: a moment where Bond’s trademark wit masks genuine relief after a close call enabled by quick thinking and Q’s rebreather gadget.

Bond’s infiltration of Palmyra remains one of the franchises most effective “shadow Bond” sequences, a showcase of the character operating at his purest as a covert agent.  The blend of stealth reconnaissance and deliberate movement underscores a version of Bond often overshadowed by flashier sequences in other movies.  More of this please!
