The brief MI6/CIA interplay hotel scene in Live and Let Die offers an intriguing glimpse into the agencies’ behind-the-scenes rapport, even if the execution feels bizarre. Felix’s mention of the stunned Mrs. Bell being in “intensive care” is odd and sad since the apparent throwaway gag of Bond’s “flying lessons” sent her to the hospital. And it raises the question of whether the filmmakers intended it as a dark punchline or simply misjudged the tone.
Though quick, the scene feels out of touch as MI6 and CIA are treated with room service in a luxury hotel room and Bond’s only fixation of the moment on securing double vents in his suit (as seen in the above quote), from an on-site tailor of all people. I mean, the double vents make sense for mission mobility but the whole scene reeks of misplaced priorities. Weird!
