Dalton’s Bond makes a small cultural slip with the “Afghan” remark in The Living Daylights, since the country’s languages are Pashto and Dari. But the moment still highlights his genuine warmth towards Kara Milovy in his most convincing and emotionally grounded romance as 007.
Their bond (no pun intended) is endearing precisely because Dalton allows sincerity to soften Bond’s usual detachment. It’s most apparent in the “forgotten” cello scene, where Bond risks their safety to retrieve the cello simply because he understands its importance to Kara. It’s a gesture that feels unusually affectionate for Dalton’s Bond.
Ultimately, their chemistry had the potential to evolve naturally across multiple films like the later Bond/Swann arc. Personally, in an alternate universe I think I’d enjoy Kara and Bond’s relationship more.
