Some of Bond’s interactions with Bibi Dahl in For Your Eyes Only remain among the most cringe of the franchise. The blatantly noticeable age gap between Roger Moore and his co-star becomes impossible to ignore in their scenes, as Moore’s normally suave and commanding Bond instead feels conspicuously out of place opposite a character written as a flirtatious, twenty-something figure skater. The dynamic doesn’t just feel awkward, it borders on inappropriate.
To Moore’s credit, there are several attempts to soften the discomfort by having Bond explicitly decline Bibi’s advances, even joking about buying her an ice cream. But these gestures only highlight how ill-conceived the pairing is to begin with, and it hits its climax When Bibi teases Bond by insisting he’s “jealous” of her rapport with Erich Kriegler. Bond’s reference to his “rival for her affections” is so wildly implausible that his exaggerated tone makes it clear he’s deliberately steering the interaction for his agenda, and not indulging in it. Phew!
