This seemingly throwaway line from Pierce Brosnan’s Bond to M in Die Another Day actually marks an interesting power shift in their dynamic.  Beneath the dry delivery lies a moment of tactical brilliance where Bond turns the tables on his superior.  After producing the diamonds that link directly to Gustav Graves, M has no choice but to reinstate him to continue his work.

It’s one of those rare instances where Bond outmaneuvers the bureaucracy that controls him, using his knowledge as leverage for personal gain.  For all M’s authority, Bond subtly reminds her that he operates best with a loose leash.
