GoldenEye (1995)

Not another human being in sight

In this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment from GoldenEye, Bond and Natalya share a rare sense of calm as they drive through the Caribbean in his sleek BMW Z3 in a scene that feels more like a honeymoon getaway than a spy mission.  The setting (and the isolation portrayed by this quote from Natalya) conveys a fleeting sense of normalcy and calm, as if Bond has momentarily stepped out of his double-O existence to simply be with someone.

It’s one of those scenes that reminds us that even this hardened agent yearns, however briefly, for connection beyond duty.  Few Bond movies capture this glimpse of a “removed” James Bond.  Not surprisingly, Daniel Craig’s Bond’s relationship with Vesper Lynd evokes a similar emotional weight.
