If there’s one thing the James Bond franchise has always done brilliantly, it’s adapting to its time. Every era of Bond reflects the world it was made in: from the Cold War tension of From Russia With Love to the post-9/11 grit of Casino Royale. As I’ve expressed in other posts, Bond 26 would benefit from a period piece setting because of the poor ending of No Time To Die. Sorry, I can’t ignore the watershed event of Bond’s death and sweep it under the rug.
Anyways, a 1970s setting (if done properly) could be a bold artistic choice and not a gimmick. Imagine revisiting Bond’s classic formula with modern filmmaking technology and over-the-top interpretations of 1970s pop culture and clothing. How about: Bond and the CIA’s Felix Leiter investigate the criminal enterprise behind Studio 54 that has ties to international drug trafficking which causes President Nixon to declare a “War On Drugs” in the early 1970s.
