Sour mash, but not too sweet, please.

Bond’s order of a traditional Kentucky mint julep is delivered with his trademark blend of charm and snobbery.  Offered by Goldfinger, the moment feels less like a prelude to an apocalyptic gold manipulation scheme and more like a genteel afternoon at the Kentucky Derby.  The phrase “sour mash” refers to a whiskey production method (not a flavor) so Bond’s request is both impressively specific and hilariously unnecessary.  It’s the kind of drink order that says, “I have refined taste…and zero self-awareness.”

Goldfinger’s line perfectly captures the battle of wits between the two.  Their dialogue is among the most adversarial and entertaining in the entire franchise, full of polite venom and mutual admiration.  Just when Goldfinger seems to have the upper hand, Bond delivers a verbal counterpunch.  It’s amazing how much I like the dialogue despite the…
